In the last few years I get asked more and more about head gear for players. Most of the time, the question comes from parents who are concerned about their child's protection. I know there are varying degrees of support of the use of protective head wear. However, I think it's safe to say that most coaches now recommend headgear use if a player has had head injuries, is susceptible to head injuries or if the parent is adamant about head protection. And in those cases (or any time you consider protective head wear), I think you must start your research with the line of headguards from industry leader Full90. You see, the Full90 Premier headguard covers the forehead, sides and back of the head and, they claim, can reduce the impact force of a blow by up to 50% which greatly reduces the chance for concussions. Although I have not worn the product in game action myself, I have worn Full90 Select and Premier models for testing and I have had several players who have worn the various Full90 models. From my testing standpoint, I did find the head piece a bit distracting to wear- at first. But after wearing it for a few minutes I found it to be light weight, comfortable and really no bother. When I headed the ball, I didn't feel like I gained any dis/advantage in terms of distance, it seemed rather normal. In talking with my players that have worn Full90 for extended periods, they had the same observations. Interestingly, each of them told me at least one time that they felt wearing the Full90 head gear "saved them" from further injury (in their opinion). And, its not surprising that it was because of these close calls that the overwhelming majority of these players had continued to count their Full90 head gear as standard equipment any time they trained or played. This last point, the confidence aspect, is so important to remember when deciding whether or not to wear protective head gear. Considering my own experience as well as veteran users of Full90 headguards, I would highly recommend any of the 3 models available from Full90. Although all models offer excellent protection and quality construction, my Editors' Choice recommendation is the Premier model. It's adjustability, coverage of the back of the head, sleek design and snugger fit make it worth the money for the upgrade from the other models. |
