Before I start reviewing this product- if you are not a HS, ODP or college coach, or, a league, camp or a trainer of older age groups you can totally skip this review. That's because this product from Soccer Wall, in my opinion, is only a viable purchase (in terms of value for the money) for those situations that will devote substantial time to set pieces or have the money to put into training equipment. OK, the review. I waited and bought 4 Soccer Wall adult mannequins after they made a substantial quality improvement. I received these in a box that was, surprisingly, smaller then I was expecting. However, once I took them out of the box and put them together I found that the small packaging was just smart use of space and in no way reflected on the quality of the product. In fact, I was pleasantly surprised by the heavy duty feel of the springs, quality metal and superb welding that was used in the manufacturer of this product. Add in the mesh "body" that easily fits over the metal frame and you have a great looking product. I used the Soccer Wall for one High School girls season and besides the obvious use of substituting these for live bodies in a wall, I looked for ways to incorporate them into as many training sessions as possible. As the literature that accompanies the product (video and sample exercises) suggests, it WAS very easy to find uses for these. I used them as defenders in shooting drills and to represent the back four of our opponents to teach about passing through gaps. I used them as targets for crossing, clearing and for obstacles for heading- just to name a few examples. All in all, I was very pleased with the functionality of them. They were lightweight, yet strong, and went into the ground with acceptable ease and they stood up to wind very well. However, their bulk meant they were not as easy as cones to drag out of the equipment room and it took a two players to each two of the pieces out to the field. Although these came with an equipment bag, using it would require you to break down these free kick men, which isn't hard, but is a bit of a bother. Also, another knock against them is the mesh "body" started to rip where the velcro straps attach the body to the frame. This will require some sewing repair because if left, it will rip across the body. In conclusion, these are a little expensive but I think this is a very well made product especially in the most important frame parts. Keeping that in mind, I think under the right circumstances, the Soccer Wall will be a great addition to your equipment shed. And if you don't have an equipment shed or a storage room at your field, stick with cones and corner flags. |
